This may look like a picture of an underground car park but that's not really what I was going for. What struck me about this place on the place when I was there early evening last summer was how quiet it was (at that moment) and with the bright, hot sunshine pouring down from a ventilation shaft above, how pleasant and uplifting it was. I have had that experience before in art galleries and cathedrals but never in a car park. Something about the simple brutalist engineering and functional simplicity can, momentarily, remove all visual noise and distraction and give rise to a very calm and pleasant present moment if the conditions are just right. Mostly they don't because cars and people are constantly moving through them but it's great when it happens and on this occasion I was present enough to notice it. My main concern was to capture light properly which I'm very pleased with, I also left out some wires, pipes and other distracting details, I found without them the painting more accurately captured the quiet, uplifting, transcendent experience.
I like to think of this as a semi abstract or figurative painting because the apparent subject matter isn't really the subject matter.
The painting is framed in a simple (not cheap) black frame about 5 cm wide and 2 cm deep.
