The Stone Field

This bold, vibrant and energetic painting celebrates the winter solstice.  It is filled with colour of mid-winter sunshine with purples and golden yellows dominating.  This field, flooded in mid-December is home to the Leabegstanding stone“.  While the field retains its cut stubble of the autumn’s wheat harvest, the stone at the centre of the painting stands alone. The east face of the stone is aligned with the rising sun at the time of the winter solstice. In ancient times, the sun was considered dormant for a period, because the days don’t begin to lengthen until three days after the solstice.  After three days, there is the  the birth of the new solar year,

Standing stones vary in date from about the late Bronze Age period to the Early Iron Age.   The stone field, which together with the colours of the mid-winter inspired this painting, is situated just to the north of Newcastle, near the Wicklow coast.
