About the Artist
I like to paint first hand ‘en plein air’, as well as in the studio (for still life, portraits and figure work). Painting and drawing from life lends conviction and directness to gesture-marks and colour. I work in the figurative/realist, even academic, tradition so the artists I look to for lessons and inspiration are drawn from a very wide field. Having a good composition is key. If that’s right, the painting makes itself! Often I look for some dramatic lighting to help organise the composition. I’m told my paintings are spatially well organised – perhaps that’s because I once worked as an architect!
